Understanding Your Options for Funded Support Services

Introduction Navigating the world of Medicaid can feel overwhelming. In Ohio, the Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD) offers several “waivers” that allow individuals to receive care in their community rather than in an institutional setting.

Breaking Down the Three Main Waivers

  1. Individual Options (IO) Waiver: This is the most comprehensive waiver. It is designed for individuals who have significant needs and requires a higher level of funding for 24/7 or intensive daily support.
  2. Level One Waiver: This is intended for individuals who have a strong natural support system (like family) but need a moderate amount of professional assistance to remain stable and safe at home.
  3. SELF Waiver: The Self-Empowered Life Funding (SELF) waiver is Ohio’s first participant-directed waiver. it gives individuals the most control over who provides their services and how their budget is spent.
